For the first time, Winyo, the celebrated Kenyan singer, songwriter and King of Benga, brings his soulful, genre-defying sound to London for an intimate headline gig.

Bio

Born Shiphton Onyango on the shores of Lake Victoria, Winyo takes his name from the Luo word for “bird” — a fitting emblem for a voice that soars with ease, beauty and fragility.

Over two decades, he has reimagined Benga, the guitar-driven genre born of Luo culture in 1950s Kenya, weaving it with Afro jazz, blues and R&B to create a sound that is unmistakably East African and utterly captivating.

Twice shortlisted for the Radio France International Discoveries award, Winyo has shared stages and studios with Joss Stone, Vieux Farka Touré, Gilberto Gil and Oliver Mtukudzi. Now, at last, London gets him up close.
